Sanofi has signalled its continuing commitment to support patient groups in the UK with the launch of its 2012 Patient Group Bursary. With the NHS in England continuing to undergo major structural and cultural change through the implementation of the Government’s healthcare reforms, the company continues to believe that patient groups will have a more important role than ever before in championing the needs of individual patients and driving up the quality of their care.

In order to be successful, patient groups entering the 2012 bursary scheme will need to demonstrate that their programmes can deliver improvements in patient empowerment and information. Applications are welcomed from patient groups in the broadest sense, be they local groups, social enterprises and even professional associations, for which three successful applicants will receive a grant to the value of either £25,000, £15,000 or £10,000.

Announcing that the scheme will be running for a second year, Sanofi UK General Manager, Steve Oldfield, said: “Last year’s initiative was a huge success and we were delighted to demonstrate our support to patient groups. We are excited to be rolling out this programme for a second year and we look forward to continuing our work in partnership with patient groups, delivering the aim of bringing about improvements in patient empowerment and information.”

A panel of expert judges, chaired by Steve Oldfield and including Baroness Pitkeathley OBE, Labour Deputy Speaker in the House of Lords; Baroness Neuberger DBE, Senior Rabbi of West London Synagogue, Broadcaster and Author; and Baroness Morris of Bolton OBE, Conservative Deputy Speaker in the House of Lords and Former Shadow spokesperson for Health, will meet in May to assess applications and decide the winning programmes.

Applications for the scheme are now open and will close on Friday 27th April. Further information about the criteria for applications, the application form and the selection process can be found on the company website at http://www.sanofi.co.uk/.
