Owen Mumford, one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of medical devices has opened its doors for business in China. Jim Zhang, who has been appointed General Manager, will head up the new sales office in Shanghai. A team of four has also been recruited including a Sales Manager (Shanghai), a Sales Supervisor (Beijing), a Marketing Manager and a Business Co-ordinator (both based in Shanghai). And as business develops, the plan is to build a bigger team.

Jim Zhang began his professional life as a Thoracic surgeon before pursuing a successful career in healthcare sales and marketing. His remit now is to develop an Owen Mumford branded business across China. The move into Asia is an exciting move for the company, which already has offices in the US and Europe but as a leading manufacturer of medical devices (many of which are used to diagnose, monitor and treat diabetes), now is the perfect time to become part of the Asian market. The WHO (World Health Organisation) estimates there are 92 million diabetics and 150 million pre-diabetics in China alone (1) and the number of diabetics in China is predicted to increase to a staggering 130 million by 2030 according to the International Diabetes Federation. (2)

Endorsing such concerns, Jim Zhang said: “We have started to see a real increase in diabetes in China and as Owen Mumford’s main focus is for the treatment of this disease, we are perfectly positioned to help. Within a decade China is set to become one of the world’s largest medical device markets and this is therefore an excellent time to build our brand, reputation, relationships and business.”

Jarl Severn, Managing Director of Owen Mumford said: “The diabetes situation in China is serious. In our experience, patients need help to manage their condition and I know that with our product portfolio in capillary blood sampling and insulin injection devices, we are one of the best placed companies to do that.”
