At an award ceremony in Essen, Germany, today Novo Nordisk is awarded the red dot Best of the Best prize for its next-generation insulin injection pen, the NovoPen® 5. The award is given in the product design category among 4,515 other products where icons such as Apple’s iPhone and BMW 5 series figure among the previous winners.

In the Red Dot yearbook 2012, the jury committee explains the thoughts behind the choice of NovoPen® 5 as the overall winner:

“The interactive nature of NovoPen® 5 insulin injection pen offers people with diabetes the highest degree of safety and self-confidence. This injection pen impresses with its clear language of form and possesses a well thought-out, self-explanatory functionality”.

The lead designer behind the NovoPen® 5, Ramin Nateghi-Elahi, Novo Nordisk, explains the aim to heighten the safety of insulin treatment by integrating a memory function into the injection pen that reminds the patient whether a dose has been taken or not. This helps the patient to avoid missing an injection leading to uncontrolled blood sugar levels or overdosing insulin, which may have severe consequences.

Ramin acknowledges that the major challenge in the development of the pen was to add the memory function to the NovoPen® 5 while maintaining the sleek and discrete design of an injection pen, which is a high priority for people with diabetes.
