The programme for the UK’s first Cancer Congress Update (CCU) has been announced. Organised by medical education agency Succinct Communications, this new event allows oncologists and haematologists to learn about the latest cancer developments from around the world. The first of these annual meetings is taking place in central London on 7th July 2009.

CCU will review five key clinical areas: breast, colorectal, lung and prostate cancer and haematological malignancies, based on the latest data from across the globe, including ASCO 2009. It will be an opportunity to exchange ideas on emerging trends with a panel of experts. The final session will look at international developments in a UK context, discuss improvements in clinical practice, market access issues and review joint working initiatives between NHS and industry.

The 2009 forum will cover the following topics:

  • Plenary session: Cancer—a chronic disease?
  • Advances in colorectal cancer—where are we going?
  • Emerging data and therapies for patients with lung cancer
  • Developing systemic strategies in prostate cancer
  • Targeting breast cancer: tailoring management
  • Implications for UK practice: discussion

The organiser, Succinct Communications, already runs established cancer education events such as the British Oncology Pharmacy Association’s annual symposium (BOPA). Managing Director Sean McGrath said: “The first Cancer Congress Update is a great opportunity for many clinicians and other HCPs who may find it difficult to attend overseas seminars. Our research has found a big demand for a meeting such as this and the event has the potential to become the key UK forum for oncologists and haematologists to find new ways of using the latest cancer advances.”

Speakers already confirmed include Prof David Cameron, Director of the NCRN, David Thompson, Chair of BOPA, Annie Young, Past President of UKONS, Dr Mark Verrill of the North East Cancer Network, Dr Rob Glynne-Jones, Medical Director of Colon Cancer Concern and Consultant Haematologist Dr Steve Schey. The meeting is being supported by all the main oncology and haematology companies including Roche, sanofi-aventis and Novartis. It will be held at the Park Plaza Hotel, Victoria, London from 09.30 on 7th July 2009. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. A registration fee of £42.50 per person applies.
