The changing landscape of automation in pre-clinical drug discovery

Industry Focus 2010 / 22 February 2010 /

Over the past decade we have seen a significant realignment of activities associated with drug discovery and this will continue for a multitude of reasons. Within the pharmaceutical industry we have seen significant changes e.g. a decrease in the numbers of drugs that are being approved by the regulatory authorities and the looming expiration of patented drugs, both of which have an immediate and direct consequence on revenue streams. In light of these issues, the pharmaceutical industry is responding appropriately. These changes have included a re-assessment of the strategies being employed in the pre-clinical phase of drug discovery, some of which are discussed in relation to automation solutions. (more…)

2009: A landmark year for stem cells

Industry Focus 2010 / 22 February 2010 /

It would be fair to say that these past 12 months have been a watershed year for stem cell science. In years to come we may look back on 2009 and recognise it as the year in which nascent areas of science, medicine and technology came together to slowly nudge stem cell biology into the mainstream. Scientific and academic progress aside, it also may mark the year in which the field first matured to a stage at which commercial viability came to the cusp of realisation. (more…)

Microbiological quality for non-sterile drug product for the 21st century

Industry Focus 2010 / 22 February 2010 /

For decades microbiological quality has remain dormant while the pharmaceutical industry has continued to evolve. Compendial methods and limits, while now generally harmonised throughout the world, still reflect the same methods utilised 100 years ago. Although there is more clarification around the number and types of organisms permitted in products since routes of administration are better defined, there is little change to what is considered an acceptable number or the types of organisms allowed in product. The good news is, however, in this new environment of Quality by Design (QbD) and the Process Analytical Technology Initiative1 outlined in Quality for the 21st Century, application of a Risk Based approach can provide some flexibility for microbial control. Through an enhanced understanding of the product and process gained during product development, some of the repetitive and inefficient end product testing may be replaced with real time or supportive data to confirm microbial quality.
