The Landeslabor Berlin-Brandenburg (LLBB) in Frankfurt, Germany, is dedicated to the protection of human and animal safety, health and welfare, and has chosen Tecan’s liquid handling workstations to help monitor diseases in cattle, including an extensive testing program for the eradication of Bovine Herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1). “By using Tecan’s process automation solutions for fully automated sample processing and high throughput ELISA, our laboratory is able to process close to 7,000 samples per day for BHV-1 testing at peak times. This has greatly enhanced the efficacy and reliability of the LLBB’s diagnostic service,” explained Sabine Thalheim at LLBB’s Department of Infectious Disease Testing.

Tecan and PhyNexus have developed standard processes for automating protein purification using PhyTip® columns integrated onto a Freedom EVO® liquid handling platform. The Freedom EVO is equipped with a liquid handling arm and a MultiChannel Arm™, and controlled using specially adapted scripts of standard Freedom EVOware® operating software. Although primarily used for protein purification, the disposable PhyTip columns can be supplied packed with various types of resin, making their application range extremely broad. The majority of PhyTip columns do not require additional hardware, the only exception being gel filtration columns, which use a specific PhyNexus rack and are transported on the Freedom EVO platform by a robotic manipulator arm.

The Leibniz-Institut für Molekulare Pharmakologie in Berlin, Germany, is using Tecan’s Freedom EVO® workstations for systematic high throughput screening of bioactive small molecule libraries, looking for potential research tools and targets for drug development. Dr Jens Peter von Kries, Head of the Institute’s Screening Unit, explained: “The Screening Unit has a small team of staff performing library screens of around 20,000 compounds a day, and this high throughput is partly thanks to the flexibility of our Freedom EVO workstations. Many of our projects use either high content screening with automated microscopes or genome-wide RNA interference (RNAi) studies, and we have a Freedom EVO system configured for each of these methods, as well as a platform equipped with a REMP Small Size Store™ for management of the ChemBioNet screening library.”
