Process analytical technology (PAT) has the potential to transform pharmaceutical manufacturing by improving process understanding, product quality and economics.

Common PAT tools, including spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques, can be used inline, online and at-line to monitor and control critical parameters during manufacturing.

Spectroscopic methods such as near infrared (NIR), Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy are of particular interest because they do not require sample collection or manipulation. However, despite significant process in the last decade, several challenges remain for routine implementation of this technology.

In this session, speakers will draw on their own experiences to advise on best practices for implementing PAT. They will explore applications of the technology, discuss emerging PAT tools, as well as examine some of the barriers to widespread PAT adoption and how they might be overcome.

Carrie Mason, Associate Director, Lonza Biologics Mammalian R&D Group 

Carrie heads a multidisciplinary centre of excellence responsible for the identification, development and roll out of Process Analytical Technologies with associated automation.  She has over 27 years of industrial experience with expertise in purification development, analytical methodologies, and is currently building knowledge of bioreactor operations. Carrie is a participant in BioPhorum and the BioInnovation Group and has a passion for the general advancement of innovation in biomanufacturing as well as inspiring the next generations of scientists.

Daniel Myatt, Senior Analytical Scientist at the National Biologics Manufacturing Centre

Daniel is a Senior Analytical Scientist at the National Biologics Manufacturing Centre (NBMC) of the Centre for Process Innovation (CPI, UK). He has a degree in Biochemistry and a PhD in Biophysics from the University of Manchester (UK). He has experience of a variety of biochemical and biophysical techniques gained from working in Biopharma, academic and at large scale facilities.

Mark John Milton, Scientific Fellow, Takeda Pharmaceuticals

Mark is a Scientific Fellow at Takeda Pharmaceuticals in Boston, MA and recently Fujisawa, Japan with over 25 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry. He is responsible for all aspects of NMR spectroscopy at Takeda with a particular focus on small molecule, qNMR, solid state polymorphism, and reaction monitoring. He is also interested in the application of miniaturized NMR spectrometers and relaxometers which can be used directly in the fume hood.  He has a PhD in Biophysics from St. Andrews University in Scotland.
