Webinar

Lipid formulations in softgels – enhancing bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy

3 September 2025

2:00pm

This webinar will explore how lipid formulations in softgels can enhance drug absorption and bioavailability.

In pharmaceutical development, achieving optimal bioavailability of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) is crucial for therapeutic success. Lipid formulations have emerged as a prominent solution to this challenge.

These formulations can facilitate lymphatic transport, which is especially beneficial for poorly soluble drugs that suffer from high first pass metabolism, including hormones and other therapeutic agents.

This webinar will delve into the different types of lipid formulations, such as solutions, suspensions, emulsions, and self-(micro)emulsifying systems. Applications span diverse therapeutic areas including HIV therapy, oncology, immunosuppressants, and emerging treatments like medicinal cannabis (eg, CBD).

Key learning points:

  • Lipid formulation development process, including the screening tools used to optimise lipid formulations
  • Critical steps involved in scaling up and industrialising these formulations to ensure consistent and efficient production
  • How lipid formulations in softgels can revolutionise drug delivery and improve patient outcomes.

SPEAKERS

Kaspar

Kaspar van den Dreis – Senior Director Science and Innovations (softgels)

In his current role at Thermo Fisher Scientific, he provides strategic direction to the research and development team, focusing on the creation of innovative softgel formulations, processes, and technologies to better serve pharmaceutical companies and patients.

Kaspar has an extensive publication record on pharmaceutical manufacturing processes, has presented at numerous scientific conferences, and has supported multiple patent applications. He has significant expertise in the formulation of poorly soluble compounds and self-emulsifying drug delivery systems with experience spanning the entire solid dose form development cycle.

De Dipanwita

De Dipanwita – Senior Formulation Manager (softgels)

Dr. De joined Patheon by Thermo Fisher Scientific in 2018 as a Formulation Scientist in the R&D department and is currently leading the team as a Formulation Manager. She holds a doctoral degree in chemistry with multidisciplinary training in physical chemistry and biochemistry, complemented by hands-on experience and data analysis skills that have led to publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences.

At Thermo Fisher, Dr. De leads and manages various internal and external development projects focused on innovative softgel technologies. Her team develops softgel formulations for generic APIs, poorly soluble drugs, and new chemical entities for the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries using a Quality by Design (QbD) approach.
