Biogen is acquiring US biotech firm RayThera for up to $1 billion, through which it will obtain rights to a Phase I-ready lead asset, thus expanding its immunology pipeline.
As part of the acquisition, Biogen will access multiple anti-inflammatory assets for immune-mediated conditions across a range of indications.
The firm will handle the global development, manufacturing and global commercialisation of these assets.
Dr Priya Singhal, Executive Vice President and Head of Development at Biogen said: “With this acquisition, we are further deepening our pipeline in immunology by adding a suite of assets that can allow us to expand into new disease areas.
“We believe these assets can meaningfully contribute to our long-term pipeline potential and we’re excited about the opportunity to rapidly advance the first candidate into the clinic.”

Qing Dong, co-founder, Chairman and CEO of RayThera said: “With its strong global development capabilities in immunology, we believe that Biogen is the natural fit to move these assets forward into Phase I development and beyond.”
RayThera is also eligible for clinical and regulatory milestone payments.
The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to be finalised in Q3 of 2026.
Continuing its drug development efforts, in March, Biogen achieved a key milestone in advancing its rare epilepsy drug zorevunersen alongside Stoke Therapeutics. Data from two phase I/IIa trials and ongoing extension studies illustrated the antisense oligonucleotide as the first to demonstrate disease modifying capability for Dravet syndrome.
